Identifying Forest
Practices Inconsitent
with SFI Principles
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) program has its own version of a neighborhood watch in Georgia. Our neighborhood is Georgia forests, including the 4 million acres owned by SFI program participants and other lands on which we harvest timber.

Monitoring Our Practices
The SFI Implementation Committee works with state agencies to address public concerns about forestry practices, particularly as it relates to compliance with forestry Best Management Practices designed to protect water quality. SFI sponsors a “hotline” number for reporting practices that are inconsistent with SFI program goals.

The SFI Standard calls for prompt reforestation, harvest size limits and protection of wildlife, water quality and special sites. Along with these, SFI participants also adhere to Georgia’s Best Management Practices (BMPs) for forestry that are designed to protect water quality during forestry activities. Some areas to pay particular attention to are:

stream crossings

forest road construction

maintenance of buffer zones along streams and rivers

clean-up of trash or debris
